A New Year

Wow have I have missed a little over a month and it’s the start of a new year, so I am thinking this might be a long one.

It has just been over a year since I left my job in commercial insurance underwriting.  It really does not feel that long ago.  I still feel that it was the best decision I have made and feel completely happy with it.  I feel so much better mentally and physically.  I have learned a lot about myself during this time and what I want to do when I grow up (LOL!).  Coding fills that workaholic need I still have for detail oriented work and love that there is always something new to learn.  However changing my mindset from a person that everyone relied on for help to someone that needs help has been a struggle.  I am not always sure what I need help with and when I need to ask for help.  I am sure once I finish learning where I feel comfortable with my abilities and once I have a job where I am coding full-time, I will find that zen zone. 😎 More

Christmas and all that jazz . . .

My husband’s Christmas party was fun. Hubby wimped out on me and we didn’t go anywhere else afterwards. We even used Uber so we could drink some and stay out. But it was nice to dress up and eat at a traditional Italian restaurant. Cafe Luna is definitely a place to go in downtown Raleigh if you want some good Italian food. Though next time we are out we are definitely going to Bitter Sweet, which is a dessert bar. Yum! More

Inspiration Found Again

I think I have discovered my inspiration for coding again.  I did not realize I had went into a downward spiral until talking with a new-found comrade in developing on Friday via a meeting at Starbucks.  Ironic I do not drink coffee.  However I do love the smell and for some reason coffee shops are associated with one on one networking/meetings.   More

Too much and not enough

I am having the realization that learning too much can be just as bad for you, as knowing too little.  I have been trying to learn as much as I can and my Ruby on Rails skills have suffered for it.  So I am going back to refresh my Ruby on Rails skills and only add learning Javascript as that is used everywhere on everything.  I am taking a Basic Javascript workshop by Girl Develop IT.  It is simple, but being simple does not always imply easy.  There is so much out there and I am at a lapse of just where to go.  I know getting a job in this industry is knowing the right people and that in itself is a large task to deal with.  I want to go somewhere I can learn and grow.  Making the most $$ I can at the moment is not as big a deal to me as learning and getting the experience that will help me become a respected developer in the website development field.  I do love spending time coding.  It fulfills something within me and makes me forget the time I am working on, whatever it may be.  I actually have to remember to boot myself off the computer or I will be coding till 2am in the morning.  Never have I done that with any other career, job or hobby (except reading a really good book).   More

Uber and other things

Life has been fun lately!   I am currently taking a Basic Javascript workshop with Girl Develop It and learning WordPress via Teamtreehouse.  Javascript is much simpler than I thought it would be, which I am very grateful.  I learned so much about website development since April I am completely amazed I remember most of it.  And a good bit of it is self-study.   It is amazing how much you can learn in a short period of time if you are motivated.

End of first week of class

The first week of Coding (Programing) Immersion class was a little information overflow.   Our homework for the week was to create a simple website with HTML and CSS.  I did not completely finish it as I have to know the reason why something work a certain way.  I could not just copy and paste stuff from other websites and play with it.  Also our end goal with this class is to able able to create a website with Ruby on Rails.  So I went through the tutorial on creating a Ruby on Rails website.  That way I could make notes on it and notate the reason why and how a line of coding was being used.  I may not have finished the project, but I have a much better understanding of coding a website with Ruby on Rails which also uses HTML, CSS and JavaScript.  I am okay with that.

Usually we have Friday off, but we had a field trip to ThoughtBot and then one of the senior programmers there came back to class with us and gave us some good advice on Developer Survival Tactics.  It was a great presentation.
