A New Year

Wow have I have missed a little over a month and it’s the start of a new year, so I am thinking this might be a long one.

It has just been over a year since I left my job in commercial insurance underwriting.  It really does not feel that long ago.  I still feel that it was the best decision I have made and feel completely happy with it.  I feel so much better mentally and physically.  I have learned a lot about myself during this time and what I want to do when I grow up (LOL!).  Coding fills that workaholic need I still have for detail oriented work and love that there is always something new to learn.  However changing my mindset from a person that everyone relied on for help to someone that needs help has been a struggle.  I am not always sure what I need help with and when I need to ask for help.  I am sure once I finish learning where I feel comfortable with my abilities and once I have a job where I am coding full-time, I will find that zen zone. 😎 More

Another 2 weeks

Well, right now it seems as every 2 weeks is when I remember to blog.  I really need to make myself a reminder.  This helps put my brain in order for everything I have been doing.  Well obviously, I did finish that contract job.  It was a bit over my experience level but now I have some things to add to my list in learning and I am very appreciative of the experience.   More

Looking and waiting

I meant to type this out a few days ago, but kept getting sidetracked.  I have been looking for a new job and I have had a few recruiters contact me, so that is something.  I do have an interview next week for somewhere I really would like to work, so we will see how that goes.  I also was just contacted by a recruiter for a 6 months for Cisco, but I am not sure I want to work for a big corporation. Done and over!!

It’s been a little over a week, but I have completed the bootcamp and recovered from bronchitis.  I slept a lot last week and this weekend.  My daughter was so kind and shared the crud with me and mine turned into bronchitis.  Unfortunately I was not able to stay the entire last day of class, because I felt so bad and was not able to participate as much on our Team Project.  One of the other students on the team was sick too, so the project was not as great as I would have liked.  Of all the weeks to get sick that was definitely not the one. 😦

4 more days . . . websites and sickness

I cannot believe I only have four more days of Coding Camp!  It really does not seem that much time has passed.

Last week we began Team and Individual final websites.  The Team website we are doing is creating a Dog Rescue site. Easy to pick since 2 of us have rescued pets.  Though this weekend was hit or miss since I got sick and one of the other two mates was sick.  Of all of the weekends to get sick, it had to be the last weekend before the end of class. Ugh! More

8 More Days to go

Wow, it seems as this 8 week Coding Immersion camp has flown by and only 8 more days of class to go.  I can say I am happy that I am actually figuring it out and I love the challenge.  Though there is way too much information and different ways to code for anyone to know it all.  The key is being able to Google and find the information you need to finish what you are working on at the moment.  I had a moment on Tuesday night.  Several people in my class were getting the same “pending migration error” when we attempted to add an avatar to our website and I had gone to bed irritated the night before because I could not figure it out. Tuesday night my moment happened when resolved the problem (via Google) for all of us at 10:30pm and posted it for everyone to see.  Needless to say, I slept great that night, not haunted by that error. End of first week of class

The first week of Coding (Programing) Immersion class was a little information overflow.   Our homework for the week was to create a simple website with HTML and CSS.  I did not completely finish it as I have to know the reason why something work a certain way.  I could not just copy and paste stuff from other websites and play with it.  Also our end goal with this class is to able able to create a website with Ruby on Rails.  So I went through the tutorial on creating a Ruby on Rails website.  That way I could make notes on it and notate the reason why and how a line of coding was being used.  I may not have finished the project, but I have a much better understanding of coding a website with Ruby on Rails which also uses HTML, CSS and JavaScript.  I am okay with that.

Usually we have Friday off, but we had a field trip to ThoughtBot and then one of the senior programmers there came back to class with us and gave us some good advice on Developer Survival Tactics.  It was a great presentation.
